Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
1.) What is a hackathon?
An event for people of all different technical expertise to come together to develop projects over a short period of time.
2.) What is a "Women Techmakers" hackathon?
Since its inaugural year in 2015, the Women Techmakers Tucson Hackathon served as the only women's-only hackathon in the Southwest. Now that we're moving into our 3rd year hosting the event, we decided to shake things up a bit. We've realized it's not only timely, but also important to get as many voices, experiences, networks, and skillsets represented at the 2017 event. This year, we are inviting participants across all gender identities and expressions to join. Male allies and advocates are encouraged to attend.
3.) Who can participate?
We welcome anyone of any skill level. We want you to be able to focus on hacking, coding, learning and having fun! Therefore, we aim to provide an inclusive space for folks across lines of race, gender, class, disability, and skill level. If you have any concerns, questions, or need special accommodations, please don't hesitate to contact us. While we do welcome our younger hackers to attend, we ask that participants are at least 16 years old.
4.) I need disability-related accommodations.
Not a problem. Please e-mail marijelmelo@email.arizona.edu and we'll get you squared away.
5.) How much does it cost to attend?
The entire event is free!
6.) How long will childcare be provided?
During workshop hours. Childcare will be take place in one of our rooms in the library. Please notify Maggie if you plan to use the childcare service at marijelmelo@email.arizona.edu .
7.) Do I need extensive hacking/tech skills to participate?
People of all technical expertise and levels are encouraged to attend. No programming experience needed. Do you care about the local community? Social justice? Curious about maker culture or computer programming? Have a research question? This event is the perfect venue to develop your ideas.
8.) Do the workshops cost extra to attend?
No, they are free! Workshops are available free of cost to registered attendees. Workshop topics cover a variety of tech-related topics, and are led by super-knowledgeable facilitators too.
9.) Do I need to register for workshops?
The only workshop that participants need to register for was the "Build a Drone" a drone workshop (we have limited number of drone supplies). All other workshops are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
10.) Do I need to bring anything?
A laptop is recommended. Don’t have one? No worries. Just bring yourself... and a friend!
11.) Do I have to stay all day on both days?
Nope. Stay as long as you like, and come and go as you please.
12.) Will there be prizes?
There will be several award categories (again, you don't *have* to be a coder to participate). Prize categories will be announced at the event.
13.) I don't have a project idea, should I still attend?
Yes! Don't fret if you don't have an idea--many people develop their ideas the day of the event. If you're looking for some inspiration, here's a list of potential project ideas. Also, consider listening to the project pitches: you are likely to hear a project idea that you want to help support!
